Synopsis
On December 20, 1973, an explosion shook downtown Madrid. The target was Carrero Blanco, President of the Spanish Council and number two in Franco's regime.
While the elimination of this powerful man accelerated the decline of the Spanish dictatorship, it also marked a major turning point in the history of ETA, the far-left Basque extremist organization founded in 1959 that claimed responsibility.
Even today, many questions remain on this spectacular action over which hangs the shadow of the CIA and the Mossad. Indeed, the American Israeli allies seemed to be concerned with preventing the Franco regime from acquiring nuclear weapons.
