Synopsis
The son of a banker, Edgar Degas grew up in a Parisian conservative environment. During the first 20 years of his career, he tried out different painting styles but is particularly attracted to portraits.
If Degas has been part of the impressionist movement, he only recognized himself in it for the freedom the group advocates, preferring “what one can only see in one's memory” to the reality of the world.
Even though he was the most fervent initiator of impressionist exhibits, he never really adhered to the movement or any other, opting for his own artistic path.
