Synopsis

In the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco, Portuguese sailors discovered in 1418 an archipelago that they named "Ilha da Madeira", the wooded island.

Madeira, consisting of a main island of the same name and several small satellite islands, has been attached to the European Union as an autonomous region.

Sometimes nicknamed the Floating Garden, or the Pearl of the Atlantic, the Madeira Archipelago, with its subtropical climate of incomparable mildness, breathtaking scenery with its volcanic mountains and lush vegetation, is a real little paradise planted in the middle of the ocean.
