Synopsis

When Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, are appointed to the throne of Mexico, they find themselves caught in an overwhelming drama.

Indeed, they are trapped between the ambitions of France, led by Napoleon III, the inflexible stance of the Emperor of Austria, François Joseph, and the expansionist views of the United States.

Following in the footsteps of Charlotte and Maximilian means traveling from Brussels to Milan and from Vienna to Paris before crossing the Atlantic to Mexico, where Maximilian died in 1867.
