On August 4, 2004, the people of Gibraltar celebrated three centuries of British rule.

Yet, this territory, one of the smallest in the world, has been at the center of a power struggle between two former colonial powers, Spain and the UK, which reached its climax in the late 1960s and mid-1980s and continues to this day.
