MEXICO: ABASTOS, AT THE HEART OF THE LARGEST MARKET IN THE WORLD
A financial powerhouse and prey for the cartels
In Mexico City, the Abastos market is the largest fresh produce market in the world. 150,000 people working there 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The market is the country's second-largest financial center behind the stock exchange, and as a result, it attracts great interest. Not least that of Mexico's most violent gang, the Jalisco cartel, said to have made its way right up to the top management.
