Synopsis
Thanks to its fertile floods, the Nile allowed the Pharaonic civilization to flourish along its banks. It was the only means of communication between Upper and Lower Egypt. However, the Nile was also symbolically significant, as its East bank was considered a representation of life on earth, while the West side symbolized life in the nether world, the Hereafter.
As shown by recent archaeological discoveries at Thebes, this dual vision hindered urban growth.
