Synopsis
Rockefeller, Astor, Vanderbilt, Carnegie or Morgan. These moguls of America, whose names are synonymous with great wealth, all inspired the character of Gatsby depicted by Scott Fitzgerald in 1925.
Starting from nothing, these passionate, eccentric, self-centered and often unscrupulous men built the industrial empires that made the history of the USA in the 19th century.
Many of these powerful men, philanthropists, patrons and collectors, both geniuses and demons of capitalism, married beautiful heirs of the European nobility and left behind sumptuous palaces inspired by French castles.
