Synopsis

The Burgundy region saw the birth of two of the most significant monastic movements of the Middle Ages.

Between the 10th and 12th centuries, Cluny and then Cîteaux were indeed spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and even political centers of the highest order in Europe. Many majestic buildings illustrate this influence.

Burgundy also owes some of its most famous vineyards to the monks.
