Synopsis

Gustave Flaubert was an extraordinary, meticulous, perfectionist writer who invented the modern novel in the mid-19th century.

Unwittingly, he also was the source of scandal. On January 29, 1857, the 35-year-old Flaubert was in the dock because of the character of Emma Bovary, the heroine of his novel.
