Synopsis

In 1785, Jeanne de La Motte, a penniless countess, manipulated Cardinal de Rohan into believing that he could regain Queen Marie-Antoinette's favor by offering her a piece of jewelry. Deceived by false letters and nebulous meetings, Rohan financed the purchase.

When the swindle was exposed, the Cardinal was arrested before the court at Versailles, and the Queen's already weakened reputation was definitively tarnished.
