Synopsis

After receiving a delegation from the barbarian chiefs, Valentinian plunged into one of his customary violent outbursts. It proved fatal when he suffered a brain hemorrhage, which lead to his death during the night.

His son, Gratian, replaced him as head of the Western Empire at the worst possible moment. The Goths, driven from their own lands by the Huns, were crossing the Empire’s frontiers.
